Nuova Solmine

Nuova Solmine is the top producer of Sulphuric acid in Italy with around 560,000 tons/year and oleum with around 110,000 tons/year, operating plants are in Scarlino (Grosseto) and Serravalle Scrivia (Alessandria).

The company also produces around 1m m3/year of demineralized water, 200,000 tons/year of steam and 120m kWh of electricity carbon free.

It distributes sulphuric acid and oleum in Italy and abroad, directly or through distributors and traders. It also buys sulphuric acid for its own market from both domestic and foreign producers, depending on the needs of customers and the moment, with a total average product availability of around 1m tons/year.

Nuova Solmine products, characterized by a high degree of purity, are used in many industrial processes dedicated to the production of:

  • Pigments
  • Plastics
  • Synthetic fibres
  • Metals
  • Fertilizers and pesticides
  • Drugs
  • Batteries
  • Paper
  • Foodstuffs
  • Leather
  • Detergents
  • Explosives

Sulphuric acid is also widely used in water purification.

Nuova Solmine is associated with numerous organizations at international level. It is a full member of ESA (European Sulphuric Acid Association), which brings European sulphuric acid producers together and is a division of CEFIC (European Chemical Industry Council), as well as IFA (International Fertilizer Industry Association).

It also subscribes to Confindustria (General Confederation of Italian Industry), Federchimica (Italian Federation of the Chemical Industry) and Assoelettrica (Italian Electrical Association), as well as actively participating in the Responsible Care Programme and SET (Emergency Transport Service).

An integrated management system for environment, safety, quality, social accountability and energy management is in operation at the Nuova Solmine plant in Scarlino and Serravalle Scrivia

The plant produces around 590,000 tons/year of sulphuric acid of which around 110,000 tons/year is oleum.

The plant works on a continuous cycle on three shifts and produces:

  • Sulphuric acid and oleum
  • Demineralized water
  • Steam
  • Electricity with CO2-emissions = 0

The plant is served by a railway siding and an independent wharf for oil tankers. It has a tank storage depot for sulphuric acid and oleum of 78,000 tons, which are despatched by pipeline or truck tanker, train or vessel.

The Serravalle Scrivia plant is unique in Italy. It deals with the treatment and recovery of industrial waste – mainly containing sulphur but also with high calorific value – and the regeneration of spent and process sulphuric acids.

The plant works on a continuous cycle and produces around 75,000 tons/year of sulphuric acid, of which around 10,000 tons/year is oleum.

Products manufactured at the Serravalle Scrivia plant have a degree of purity quality comparable to acid produced from elemental sulphur.
